Bhimtal in Uttaranchal is situated at a distance of 22 kms from famous Kathgodam railway station & 325 km. from New Delhi, and 17 km. from Nainital. The place gots its name from the legendary mythical character of Mahabharata, Bhim. The largest lake in the district, Bhimtal measures 1701 meters by 265 meters. The lake is situated at an altitude of 1371.6 meters above sea level. There is an island on the north eastern side of the lake which is accessible by boats. There is an island aquarium which is home to a large variety of aquatic species. The 17th century Bhimeshwar temple complex stands along the 40 feet high dam. The place is known for its natural beauty surrounded by mountains and lakes.
